Light-Activated Whitening: Laser and LED

A safety aspect worth knowing particularly concerns laser sources: excessive temperature rise that can result from improperly calibrated laser use has been associated in the literature with the risk of, in some cases irreversible, damage to pulp tissue. The laser types most used today — diode and argon — were chosen precisely because they don't cause a significant intraoral temperature rise compared to older laser technologies, but the precautionary principle still applies: the light source should always be used according to manufacturer-recommended parameters, without exceeding indicated exposure times.

In summary, while some older studies report a genuine acceleration of the whitening process with light use (particularly LED on carbamide peroxide-based gel), more recent reviews raise concrete doubts about the actual magnitude of this benefit under realistic clinical conditions. In practice, the choice of whether to use a light source in the whitening protocol should therefore be weighed considering that the expected advantage, however widely proposed commercially, isn't as solidly demonstrated as tends to be communicated to patients.
