Ultrasonic scalers used for professional scaling rely on two distinct technologies to generate vibration in the active tip: magnetostriction and the piezoelectric principle. In magnetostriction, a ferromagnetic metal core inside the instrument is subjected to an alternating magnetic field, causing it to vibrate; in the piezoelectric principle, instead, piezoelectric crystals change dimensions when subjected to an electric charge, generating tip vibration with a more linear movement compared to the elliptical one typical of magnetostrictive technology.

The two technologies have practical clinical implications. Piezoelectric scalers typically generate less heat for equivalent calculus-removal effectiveness, while producing higher-intensity vibrations; magnetostrictive ones, generating more heat, make water irrigation a non-negotiable part of the protocol, to avoid overheating that could damage the dental pulp. A clinically relevant selection criterion concerns patients with cardiac pacemakers: piezoelectric devices are generally better tolerated in these patients compared to magnetostrictive ones, which is why piezoelectric technology has progressively gained ground in European clinical practice in recent years.
