Plastic trays: tray setup is what stops you opening a drawer with contaminated gloves

Why surface contamination almost always originates in fetching material mid-appointment, how to compose a tray per procedure, and when autoclavability needs checking.

If you look at where surface contamination concentrates in a surgery, the result is almost always the same: drawer handles, cabinet doors, material packaging, keyboards. None of these points is touched deliberately with contaminated gloves; they are touched because something was needed during the appointment that had not been prepared. It is the single behaviour that defeats most disinfection protocols, and it is not corrected with more disinfectant: it is corrected by organisation upstream, that is by having on the tray everything that procedure requires before starting.

Tray setup is the formalisation of this principle. A tray is composed per procedure type — hygiene, restorative, endodontics, surgery — in the reprocessing area, where hands are clean and the material is sterile or clean depending on its destination, and it is brought into the surgery already complete. At the end of the appointment the tray leaves whole, and the surface that received the contamination is the tray's rather than the cabinet's. The practical advantage noticed first is not hygienic but temporal: the mid-procedure interruption disappears, which is also the moment when concentration is lost and errors are made.

On formats, a small-capacity container such as a 250-millilitre tray has a different purpose from a flat instrument tray: it serves as a working container for preparing and mixing materials, for collecting small components that must not roll away, or as a holding container for extracted elements and fragments to be kept. It is the item always missing at the moment it is needed, and cheap enough to keep a stock without thinking about it.

The technical point to check before purchase concerns processing. Not all plastics are autoclavable: many common containers deform on the first cycle, and a deformed tray no longer sits flat, which means instruments sliding. If the intended use is single-use, the problem does not arise; if reuse is planned, autoclavability should be looked up in the technical sheet and not inferred from appearance. For containers used to mix materials, the observation already made for measuring cups applies: hardened residue that cannot be completely removed changes the usable volume and makes the container unreliable for that purpose.
