The choice between these solutions is never arbitrary, but depends on a set of concrete clinical factors: the number and position of missing teeth, the quality and quantity of remaining bone, the health status of teeth adjacent to a partial edentulism, the patient's systemic conditions, and naturally their aesthetic and functional expectations along with budget. A single missing tooth with healthy abutment teeth, for example, naturally points toward a fixed bridge or single implant, while a fully edentulous arch necessarily requires a complete denture, removable or implant-supported depending on the number of available fixtures.

A guiding principle common to all three families is preservation of remaining tissue: modern techniques, both in implantology and traditional prosthetics, tend to favor less invasive approaches compared to the past, reducing where possible the amount of healthy natural tooth structure sacrificed to accommodate the restoration. This principle has guided, for example, the evolution of abutment preparation techniques toward more conservative designs, and the spread of solutions like Maryland bridges that avoid filing down abutment teeth in anterior cases.

An aspect often underestimated by patients, but central to the long-term success of any prosthesis, is maintenance: both fixed and removable prosthetics require specific home hygiene and periodic check-ups, because even the best-designed appliance isn't exempt from the risk of secondary caries at the margins, inflammation of supporting tissues, or mechanical wear over time.
