Disposable headrest covers: the most touched surface, and the worst disinfected
The chair headrest is the surface contacting the greatest number of patients across a working day, and the one on which disinfection works least well.
The reason lies in the material. The upholstery has a surface texture that retains residue, and the seams create grooves the cloth does not reach. Surface disinfection covers the flat area but not the interior of the seam.
There is a second, less evident problem: alcohol-based disinfectants degrade the upholstery. Applied several times a day for months, they produce microfissures that increase the retention surface — repeated disinfection progressively worsens disinfectability.
Once cracks appear, the headrest can no longer be reliably disinfected, and replacing the upholstery costs more than years of disposable covers.
Disposable protection breaks the cycle: the surface never contacts hair, skin or secretions directly, disinfectant is not needed for every patient, and the upholstery lasts as long as the chair.
In selection the parameter mattering most is grip. A cover that slips during the session forces repositioning with soiled gloves, which is exactly the gesture one sought to avoid.
Grip depends on the cut, not the material. Cap-style models with a perimeter elastic stay in place even on small headrests; plain sheet models shift at the patient's first movement.
The second parameter is impermeability. A paper headrest cover absorbs and lets through, defeating the barrier function at the moment it is needed — during irrigation or after a cough.
Sound products are paper-polyethylene laminates: paper against the patient for comfort, plastic film towards the chair for the barrier. The cost is a few cents more than plain paper.
Size should be checked against the chair model, as headrests vary considerably. A cover that is too small leaves the edges exposed, and those are precisely where the nape rests.
The economics are more favourable than they appear. Correct disinfection of a headrest — application, contact time observed, removal — takes about a minute. Across twenty patients a day that is twenty minutes, every day.
Contact time is the element almost always skipped: most disinfectants require one to five minutes of wet surface, and in practice it is wiped dry immediately. A half-completed disinfection is a task performed without the result.
In summary, the disposable headrest cover resolves a disinfection problem that in daily practice remains unresolved, protects costly upholstery and frees time between patients. It should be chosen with a perimeter elastic and a laminated impermeable construction: a plain sheet does neither one thing nor the other.
